Panoramic X-rays show a two-dimensional global view of the state and position of both jaws, teeth, sinuses, nasal area, and temporomandibular (jaw) joints. These X-rays can reveal different problems such as impacted teeth, bone abnormalities, cysts, solid growths (tumors), infections, inflammations without symptoms, and fractures as well.
The digital X-ray is a modern and exact imaging method used in dentisry that allows us to have detailed information of the area that has to be operated.
X-rays are usually avoided during pregnancy because there is a small chance that the radiation may harm the fetus.
The benefits from digital radiology are enormous. It can make a radiological facility or department filmless. The referring doctor is able to view the requested image directly on the screen of the computer and report in just a few minutes after the examination was performed, so waiting times do not have to be long.
The images are no longer held in a single location; in addition, it is easier to store them. The patient can also get the X-Ray images by e-mail if it is necessary, with the same quality.
Other advantage is that we can easily enlarge the picture and measure the distances in a very accurate way.
Consequently we can detect and treat the dental problems much easier and faster.
Taking a panoramic X-Ray is particulary important and necessary in the following cases:
- teeth sensitivity
- before performing a root canal treatment
- before all kind of surgical intervention
This procedure has to be carried out regularly in order to identify the different dental diseases.
